授業科目の内容

This course will teach students to write in English about current issues that affect Japan. Each class will present a new topic that we will focus on in-depth. We will discuss related vocabulary, read a short article about the topic, and listen to audio files of conversations and reports that deal with the issue. We will do relevant vocabulary, reading, and listening exercises in class. For homework, students will choose one of the topics discussed that day to analyze in a brief written report. Students will present this material to their classmates the following day. Students will be encouraged to express their opinions freely, and interact with their instructor and classmates entirely in English.

I will incorporate some of the methods I have used to teach writing to university students for many years.
I will also touch upon my practical experience as a fiction writer and freelance journalist.

We will use the textbook [Hot Topics Japan 1] by Stephanie Alexander (2018, Compass Publishing).
We will skip some of the units due to time constraints.

Students will be assessed on class participation and written homework.
