◆Course Description
The aim of this class is to help students improve their ability to communicate naturally in English. This course uses contemporary English lyric poetry, songs, as a way to deepen students’ understanding of the natural rhythm of spoken English. Using songs from around the world will expose students to a variety of English dialects, cultural norms, political debates, and will also given them an opportunity to learn about and understand the historical circumstances that gave rise to various musical styles, genres.
Students will be encouraged to engage actively in learning songs--though no singing talent is required in this class. Students will be coached on how best to use lyric poetry to improve their spoken English. The goal of these oral exercises is to build student confidence in speaking English by improving students’ pronunciation and intonation, and by improving their understanding of the natural flow of spoken English.
In addition to these practical aspects of spoken English, there will be various writing, reading, and research assignments throughout the course, designed to get students engaged with various topics related to popular music, culture, and history, and to deepen their understanding of the English language itself.
Active and enthusiastic participation and regular attendance in this class is essential. The main goal of this course is to help students improve their English speaking ability and, with their individual commitment, they can fully expect to be better English speakers by the end of the course.
