This creative writing course covers the basic concepts needed to help understand the structure and nature of English stories.
In this class, students will practice writing at the sentence level and paragraph level and will build up to writing a complete story of their own. Throughout the course, we will work to develop creative language skills through the study of the various elements of, and structures used in, written English narratives. Topics covered will include: establishing settings, building characters, creating conflict, organizing the story, and using dialogue, tense and descriptive language appropriately.
Students will be required to work together with other students in class as well as complete homework independently outside of class.
Some of what we study in this course will be based on my practical experience in editing materials for a variety of creative fiction projects (novels, short stories, and role-playing games).
