授業の概要　
本授業においては、英語の現代抒情詩や歌などを使って、受講者が口語英語の自然なリズムを深く理解できるようになることを目指す。世界各国の歌を学ぶことで、受講者たちは様々な英語方言や文化規範、そして政治議論に触れることができるであろうし、種々の音楽スタイルやジャンルが生じた歴史的状況についても学ぶ機会をえるであろう。
　受講者たちには積極的に歌を習うことを奨励するが、もちろん歌の才能は全く必要ない。抒情詩が、英会話の上達にいかにして役立てられるかについて、受講者たちは学ぶことになるだろう。こういった口頭での演習の目的とは、英語の発音や抑揚を向上させ、口語英語の自然な流れに関する理解を深めることで、英語を話す自信を受講者につけてもらうことである。
　こうした口語英語の実践的な側面について学習することに加えて、受講者たちがポピュラー・ミュージック、文化、そして歴史などに関する様々なトピックについて受講者たちが深く考えられるようにし、英語という言語そのものの理解を深めるために、授業では学期を通じて英作文や読解、そして調査などの様々な課題が与えられる。

Class Outline　
This class will use contemporary lyric poetry and songs in English to help students develop a deep understanding of the natural rhythms of spoken English. By studying songs from around the world, students will be exposed to a variety of English dialects, cultural norms, and political debates, as well as the historical context in which various musical styles and genres emerged.
　 Students are actively encouraged to learn to sing, but of course no singing talent is required. They will learn how lyric poetry can be used to improve their English. The purpose of these oral exercises is to give students confidence in speaking English by improving their pronunciation, intonation, and understanding of the natural flow of spoken English.
　 In addition to learning these practical aspects of spoken English, students will be given a variety of writing, reading, and research assignments throughout the semester to help them think deeply about a variety of topics related to popular music, culture, and history, and to deepen their understanding of the English language itself. 成績評価方法

There will be continuous evaluation of a student’s performance and progress in this class. Final grades will be based on attendance, active class participation, timely completion of all homework assignments, presentations, and oral examinations.

受講上の要望、または受講上の前提条件

The instructor\'s expectations are regular on-time attendance, preparation of daily homework assignments (about one hour prep each day), and active participation in class (using English at all times). All class sessions will be conducted in person. There are no special equipment requirements for the successful completion of this course.
Students can expect feedback on assignments, classroom activities, and any questions they have, in the classroom or via email. The main goal of this course is to help students improve their English speaking ability and, with their individual commitment, they can fully expect to be better English speakers by the end of the course.
