授業科目の内容

Writing is arguably one of the most valuable linguistic skills a person can have. To some, it comes easily, and as a result novelists, poets, and essayists are born. However, for others, creative writing of both fiction and non-fiction can be a struggle. Things become a little more complicated and tricky when the writing has to be done in a foreign language. The aim of this class is to be able to write 1000-word essays at the end of the course and then present them. The students will explore various topics and will be assigned to write paragraphs on these topics each week. At the end of the course, the students will be given a list of topics to choose from and write an essay on. The essay will be presented in front of the class at the end of the course.

Class 1: Getting Comfortable with English Writing Focus: Basic sentence structure, greetings, and introductions. Activity: Writing simple paragraphs and an icebreaker game.

第2回講義内容
Class 2: Describing Your Day Focus: Writing about daily routines using present tense and time expressions. Activity: Writing a paragraph about their day and pair work with peer reading.

Class 3: Writing Emails for Everyday Situations Focus: Formal and informal email structure and polite language. Activity: Writing and responding to emails based on real-life scenarios.

Class 4: Writing Persuasive Paragraphs Focus: Structuring arguments to convince others. Activity: Writing a persuasive paragraph and participating in a debate.

Class 5: Crafting Creative Narratives Focus: Writing short stories using past tense and descriptive language. Activity: Writing narratives and guessing if they’re real or imaginary.

Class 6: Introduction to Academic Writing Focus: Basics of academic writing—objective tone, structure, and evidence. Activity: Writing a structured paragraph with examples and transitions.

第7回講義内容
Class 7: Developing Academic Paragraphs Focus: Expanding essays with stronger transitions and detailed support. Activity: Writing a longer essay and refining ideas with peer feedback.

第8回講義内容
Class 8: Writing with a Twist Focus: Creative essay writing with unusual prompts. Activity: Writing unique essays based on imaginative scenarios.

Class 9: Essay Skills Workshop Focus: Sharpening specific essay-writing skills to prepare for writing full essays. Activity: Targeted practice with thesis statements, transitions, and expanding ideas.

Class 11: Revisions of essays and discussion on how to improve them.

Class 12: Presentations based on essays. Final discussions and feedback.

成績評価方法

Methods of Evaluation: There will be continuous evaluation of a student’s performance and progress in this class. Final grades will be based on attendance, active class participation, timely completion of all homework assignments, one writing project, and a final presentation.

Instructor’s Expectations: Regular on-time attendance, preparation of weekly homework assignments, and active participation in class. Students are encouraged to use mainly English in the classroom, however, Japanese is also acceptable.
