In this course, we will primarily focus on the “usage” of the language. The approach and design of the course surround the concept of empowering the learners through activating their existing English knowledge and transforming it into practical usage.
We will build up experiences in English writing through taking a three-step approach (brainstorming, writing, and editing) towards three types of essays (descriptive, opinion, and narrative). Learners will have freedom in choosing the topics of their essays with certain limitations. Instructions will focus on ways to think and approach writing at the sentence, paragraph, and essay levels, while students will be responsible for exploring words and phrases suitable for their essays.
In class, students are expected to spend time in groups to discuss and share ideas, as well as to report on their writing progress and occasionally read and edit each other’s drafts. Students will also work individually in class complete their writing as homework.
Through the course, students will gain confidence and experience in English writing, as well as practical skills that can be applied to future writing opportunities.
