ASSESSMENT MECHANISMS
Assessment mechanisms consist of: 1) a short online quiz 2) an original paper 3) an in-person exam. Of the total grade for the semester, the quiz is worth 10%, the paper 30%, and the exam 60%, and a student must complete all three assignments in order to be eligible to pass the class.
Paper
You will be assigned a topic on which you must conduct original research. The paper must be written in English. You may not use generative AI to either write parts of the paper for you or to translate the paper from Japanese into English. You may, however, use an AI program to help you brainstorm ideas for the paper or to check your spelling and grammar. It will be very important to put work into the different stages of writing the paper because it will prepare you to do well on the exam.
Quiz
The short online quiz will check your understanding of key concepts from class. The quiz will prepare you for some of the content on the in person exam.
Exam
The in person exam will require you to analyze texts similar to those referenced in lectures and linked on the class page.

ASSIGNED TEXTS
There is no required textbook. Rather, lessons will be accompanied by links to texts related to lectures and module topics. Students should familiarize themselves with the kinds of texts referenced in lectures since you will have to analyze similar texts for the paper assignment, quiz, and exam.
Lectures and assignments for this course will be in English. You do not have to have perfect English grammar or a sophisticated vocabulary to be successful in this course. Students will be successful in this course if they listen carefully to lectures and focus on communicating their understanding, thoughts, and opinions as effectively as possible in their papers and on their final exams.
