授業科目の内容

This course aims to provide opportunities to think and share opinions by reading and discussing current topics mainly on health, environment and ethical issues. The instructor will provide reading materials(from current news papers and magazines such as Time, the International Herald Tribune, Scientific Americans, Washington Post, and a number of Japanese newspapers in English). The participants will also provide a topic, making a presentation in English at the end of the course. Through reading, presentation, discussion and writing, participants will deepen their knowledge of current issues and also enlarge their productive academic vocabulary. The course also encourages the students to think critically and try to persuade other students with different positions. The topics may include baby hatch, gender selection, ethics of organ transplants, baby swapping, beauty premium.
 Apart from presentations, summary writing or a reaction paper on one of the articles of the day will also be required. English will be used most of the time.

成績評価方法

Evaluation will be based on class contribution(40%), oral presentations(30%). Assignments submitted in class will also be included(30%).

受講上の要望、または受講上の前提条件

Participants are encouraged to use English most of the time especially when they report the results of discussion in pairs and groups. Therefore, the students are expected to participate actively and communicate in English with other participants in class.
